"The Sisters have been an integral part of my life since 1968. They have enriched my spiritual life, nurtured me, laughed with me, and often given me the courage I needed to continue on my path. They make me proud to be a woman of faith." ~Monica Haupt

Sr. Mary Haupt (L) and Chuck Haupt (R) with their parents, Margaret and Jim

While traveling in Lesotho, Africa with his sister, Sr. Mary Haupt, Chuck Haupt saw first-hand the great need that the clinics and hospitals there had for supplies and equipment. When he was hired as the West Coast Executive Director of MedShare, Chuck and his wife, Mary Louise, along with Sr. Mary and the rest of the Haupt family, gathered together their resources to help address the problem.

To date, they have filled and shipped four 40-foot containers to Lesotho. The first container was filled with medical supplies and equipment from the available inventory at MedShare; local parishes and friends donated the costs to ship the container and its contents to the various clinics and hospitals in the region.

In addition to medical supplies and equipment, the second container included educational supplies and gifts for children. Spearheading the acquisition of the educational supplies were Jim and Margaret Haupt. They gathered, or purchased, over 2,000 pounds of resource books, new learning materials from local school districts, candy, yarn, toys and games. (Jim passed away in May, 2010 but Margaret continues gathering materials for future shipments.)

Chuck and Sr. Mary also involved Diane Eskenazi, who obtained donations of clothing, shoes and other items from Gymboree. Sr. Mary sent an email to the SNJMs who responded with great enthusiasm and generosity—involving ministry partners, parents, students and parishes to provide more educational supplies. Many of the Sisters, Associates and friends in Spokane, WA made bears, which were received with great delight by the children at several Lesotho preschools just in time for Christmas.

Rebecca Levy, daughter of Barbara Haupt, and her Girl Scout Troop in Bethesda, MD chose Lesotho as a service project and collected ten boxes of backpacks and school supplies to include in the container. The scouts have since become penpals with students at St. Bernadette Primary School in Lesotho.

Stephen Haupt, a farmer and horseman in the Sacramento area, researched appropriate seeds for the Lesotho area and obtained donations of these seeds from a national seed company.

This is an ongoing project. The St. Vincent de Paul Chapter at St. Theresa Parish in Oakland, the Catholic Community of Pleasanton, and several schools, parishes, businesses, and individuals continue their financial support, but more help is needed.
