Celebrating Sr. Barbara Bray

L-R: Jo Anne Quinlivan, SNJM; Barbara Bray, SNJM; Bishop Emeritus John Cummins; Cynthia Canning, SNJM and Donna Maynard, SNJM.Over 100 administrators and staff members of the Oakland Diocesan Chancery Office gathered for a luncheon on June 22 to honor and thank Sr. Barbara Bray as she retires from her ministry as Superintendent of Schools. Bishop Emeritus John Cummins offered the invocation. Bishop Michael Barber and Assistant Superintendent Linda Basman spoke in glowing and grateful terms of Barbara's gifts of servant leadership, her creation of a "community of schools" in the Diocese and her mission-driven and child-centered service during her 38 years of educational ministry in Oakland. She served as principal in two parish schools, assistant superintendent and superintendent.

Catholic Sisters Urge Senators to Take a Stand on Human Trafficking

L-R: Marilyn Wilson, BVM; Sharan Dhanoa, Director of the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking; Rosemary Everett, SNJM; Caritas Foster, SHF and Kathleen McCabe, OSF at Senator Boxer's Oakland office.The U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking group and the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center (IPJC) have been arranging meetings between women religious and their local senators to discuss human trafficking. They are urging the Senate to uphold its promise and support the Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act (S. 1968). Sr. Rosemary Everett composed a letter on this bill to Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein for South Bay Mission Centre Sisters and Associates to sign and send.

Golden Jubilee
Five Sisters of the Holy Names renewed their vows in celebration of 50 years of consecrated life on Saturday, April 2nd at St. Mary’s Church in Los Gatos. In addition, they remembered two Sisters from their group who died before the Golden Jubilee celebration: Sr. Margaret Spiller, who passed away in February, and Sr. Judy Rinek, who died in 2010.

Senior Jubilee
The Senior Jubilee held on June 4th, celebrated those Sisters reaching the milestones of 60, 70, and 80 years of consecrated life. Each of the 80 year Jubilarians were serenaded with song as it was Sr. Herbie’s 99th birthday that day, and anyone who knows Sr. Ruthie, (who is 100 ½ years old), knows that no day is complete without singing “Morning Has Broken” at least once! Although Sr. Elise Hanrahan (60 years) was unable to attend, the Senior Jubilarians remembered her in their thoughts and prayers.

Sr. Beth Liebert Honored by San Francisco Theological Seminary Faculty

At the year-end gathering for San Francisco Theological Seminary faculty (SFTS), Dean Jana Childers expressed gratitude and recognition for the work of Sr. Beth Liebert. Sr. Beth is journeying toward her final phase to retirement at SFTS and has left a remarkable impact and legacy on the topic of Christian spirituality. Her colleagues shared: "She came to us a Roman Catholic Sister, trying to learn about us, and in turn she taught us what it means to be Presbyterian."
