I am eager to give God
the best that is in me,
to thank God
for God's great gift to me.
     ~Sister Ruth Raftery, 1934

Sister Ruth (Ruthie) Raftery entered into eternal life on December 23, 2016. She was 101 years old and a professed Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 80 years. She was born in Rockville Centre, New York and moved to California when she was very young.

Sister Ruth ministered in secondary education from 1936–1979, often teaching French. She started at the Academy of the Holy Names (Pomona), then to Saint Andrew (Pasadena), Ramona Convent Secondary School (Alhambra), Holy Names High School (Oakland), Saint Monica (Santa Monica) and Marin Catholic (Kentfield). Then from 1979 until her retirement Sister Ruth found a perfect place to use her gifts ministering to both the elderly and young children at Saint Mary's Center in Oakland. Sister Ruth was recognized with many commendations for her ministry in Oakland, including "Sister Ruth Raftery Day" proclaimed by the City of Oakland.

In Sister Ruth's utter simplicity she created a heart of welcome for all. She had an unfailing dedication to the people of Saint Mary's Center. She delighted in all of life and had a contagious spirit of adventure. Her love of singing and her ability to sing almost any song is legendary. She had great love for her large and extended family and she is survived by her sister, Joan Raftery, her brother, Father Paul Raftery, OP, and numerous other relatives.

Gifts in her memory may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031 or on-line at
